Mob Assaults Doctors, Staff After Patient's Death
Consultant urologist Dr Amith Malkal was manhandled, his shirt torn and his phone — containing video counselling records — was snatched.

Hyderabad: In yet another disturbing case of violence against healthcare workers, a mob attacked doctors at United Hospital in Mahbubnagar on Monday night, following the death of a 65-year-old woman suffering from advanced cervical cancer and bilateral renal failure. The critically ill patient had been admitted with urinary retention and a grim prognosis, which had been clearly communicated to her family.
Chaos ensued after her demise, with relatives physically assaulting hospital staff. Two doctors suffered serious injuries. Consultant urologist Dr Amith Malkal was manhandled, his shirt torn and his phone — containing video counselling records — was snatched. Medical documents, including consent forms and case sheets, were destroyed. Dr Rammohan, president of IMA Palamuru, was beaten with footwear in full view of the staff.
“Even OT technicians and casualty staff were injured,” said Dr Raghavendra Kumar, a member of IMA Palamuru. A police case was registered and the Indian Medical Association (IMA) termed the incident a wake-up call. It demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits and strict action under the Medicare Service Persons Act.
In protest, the IMA announced a shutdown of outpatient and elective services across Mahbubnagar. Doctors and hospital staff gathered at the Red Cross Building on Tuesday and held a peaceful rally to the offices of the SP and district collector, submitting a memorandum seeking protection for healthcare professionals.
“The police and district administration have assured support and swift action,” said Dr Kumar. The IMA has called for another district-wide rally on Wednesday, urging wide participation from hospitals and the public.
