Advanced Paediatric Ops Performed at Gandhi Hospital

Hyderabad:The department of paediatric surgery at Gandhi Hospital said it had successfully performed complex and advanced procedures this year, ranging from laparoscopic splenectomy to thoracoscopic excision of a superior mediastinal neuroblastoma, doctors said on the occasion of National Paediatric Day. Specialists said minimally invasive surgeries had significantly improved outcomes for children with rare and complicated conditions.

One such case involved a two-and-a-half-year-old child diagnosed with cystic mesoblastic nephroma six days after birth. The baby underwent surgery on her 12th day and was discharged within 25 days. The child continues to remain healthy, said Dr K. Nagarjuna, professor and head, department of paediatric surgery.

A laparoscopic splenectomy was successfully performed on November 6, he said. “The child was admitted with an enlarged spleen, jaundice and severe anaemia, requiring blood transfusions every seven to 10 days. Laparoscopic splenectomy is a technically demanding procedure in such haematological disorders due to the high risk of bleeding,” he added.

Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) Vice Chancellor Dr K. Ramesh Reddy, who attended the programme, recalled the early days of paediatric surgery at Gandhi Hospital. “The department began with limited space but has grown into a child-friendly, well-designed facility that attracts parents and children alike. Today, it is excelling even when compared to dedicated children’s hospitals such as Niloufer Hospital.” he said.

Hospital superintendent Dr N. Vani praised the department for the growing number of surgeries and its consistent performance at the state level.
