Minor Irrigation Revival - Farmers Commission Submits Report To CM
The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction at the group’s work on the various programmes the commission took up in the last two years, and recommendations on various subjects it submitted to the government.
HYDERABAD: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Saturday called on the Telangana Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Commission to focus on issues such as crop diversification, increasing horticultural cultivation, and setting up farmer producer organizations.
Revanth Reddy was speaking with the commission members, who called on him on Saturday and submitted a report on minor irrigation that it had prepared. Commission chairman M. Kodanda Reddy briefed the Chief Minister on the recommendations in the report on ways and means to strengthen minor irrigation sources, and on their effective use in agriculture.
Among the recommendations were to re-establish a dedicated minor irrigation system with technical units to enhance water-use efficiency, set up command area-based management systems connecting minor and major irrigation resources, and the enactment of a special minor irrigation law for protection of tanks.
Kodanda Reddy, commission members Ramulu Naik, Ram Reddy Gopal Reddy, Gangadhar, and M. Bhavani Reddy were present.
A key suggestion was the need for immediate identification of full tank level (FTL) boundaries of tanks, removal of encroachments, and restoration of all minor irrigation tanks which, the commission said, was essential for water security, agricultural stabilisation that in turn could contribute to rural livelihoods.
