Minister Ponnam Hands Over Appointment Letters to Newly Selected Hostel Welfare Officers
Prabhakar hailed the appointments as a major milestone, stressing the government’s commitment to providing quality education and accommodation to underprivileged students

Hyderabad: Minister Ponnam Prabhakar on Thursday handed over appointment letters to 121 hostel officers under the BC welfare department at Secretariat. The candidates were chosen through the TGPSC recruitment exam process for 140 sanctioned Grade-2 hostel welfare officer posts. While 132 candidates were selected, appointment letters were issued to 121 as eight positions were tied up in High Court proceedings and 11 others were unable to attend the event.
Prabhakar hailed the appointments as a major milestone, stressing the government’s commitment to providing quality education and accommodation to underprivileged students. “It is a matter of great joy that within a short period of the new government assuming office, we have managed to recruit and appoint hostel welfare officers. This reflects our government’s sincerity and dedication toward poor students living in hostels,” he said.
The BC welfare department operates 703 hostels, including 390 pre-matric and 313 post-matric, collectively accommodating over 72,000 students. These students receive free food and lodging and academic supplies such as uniforms, notebooks, and bedding materials. The government allocates ₹1,330 per student from Classes 3 to 7, ₹1,540 for Classes 8 to 10, and ₹2,000 for each post-matric student.
With these new appointments, the total number of hostel welfare officers in the department stands at 485.
