Minister For Pollution-Fighting Saplings In Vana Mahotsavam Drive

Any trees displaced for road-widening projects must be translocated rather than destroyed: Tummala Nageswara Rao

NALGONDA: Agriculture minister Tummala Nageswara Rao said on Saturday that, as part of the Vana Mahotsavam tree-planting initiative, only species that reduce pollution and benefit the community should be selected for plantation.

Speaking at the Vana Mahotsavam event in YSR Nagar, Khammam, he urged that saplings be planted in road-divider medians and along city streets, noting that urban greenery is vital for a healthy environment. He instructed officials to choose pollution-mitigating, useful tree species and to remove the inconsequential Cono carpus trees previously planted under the mass-planting drive. In their place, he recommended mahogany and areca nut trees for Khammam and Bhadadri-Kothagudem districts.

He also emphasised that any trees displaced for road-widening projects must be translocated rather than destroyed.
