MIM May Lose Its Kingmaker Role in Enlarged GHMC

In the erstwhile 150-member strong GHMC Council, the MIM had 44 seats, which is nearly 30 per cent of the total strength. Unless any other party commands extraordinary popular support, the MIM would have emerged as a kingmaker.

Hyderabad: With the state government finally notifying new wards in the enlarged GHMC, the All-India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) will find its role in Hyderabad city politics severely diminished.

In the erstwhile 150-member strong GHMC Council, the MIM had 44 seats, which is nearly 30 per cent of the total strength. Unless any other party commands extraordinary popular support, the MIM would have emerged as a kingmaker.

In the enlarged GHMC Council, having 300 corporators, however, the MIM will dominate in only 70 wards — 44 wards from the old GHMC area and 25 from the newly-added areas. As it represents only 23 per cent, the MIM cannot play a key unless the GHMC poll result is evenly split among the Congress, BJP and the BRS.

However, if the state government decides to trifurcate the enlarged GHMC into three new corporations, it will help the MIM immensely. As most of its support comes from southern Hyderabad and the newly added civic body of Jalpally, the MIM will emerge as a strong entity in the southern corporation.

The southern corporation is likely to include Old City, Meerpet, Jalpally, Badangpet, Adibatla, Thukkuguda and Shamshabad.

Though recently Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy remained non-committal about the division of the mega GHMC in 2026, speculation is rife in the corridors of power about the eventual division.

In January 2025, Revanth Reddy mooted the idea of reorganising Hyderabad in Outer Ring Road into two corporations. In October 2024, roads and builds minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy hinted at the idea of splitting enlarged Hyderabad into four corporations, along the lines of Delhi.
