Hyderabad:Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited’s decision to increase its fare has evoked sharp reactions from commuters, who argue that metro travel has become costlier than Delhi and Kolkata. Under the revised structure, the minimum fare was increased from Rs 10 to Rs 12 and the maximum from Rs 60 to Rs 75.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Abhinav Achanta, a daily commuter, voiced his frustration: “We are paying more than other cities with larger networks. What are we getting in return?”
Commuters are also disappointed by the withdrawal of the 10 per cent peak-hour discount.
Describing the fare hike as “looting,” some commuters accused the metro rail authorities of prioritising revenue over public welfare and called for the reintroduction of discount hours.
Passengers have also raised concerns about declining hygiene standards in stations and coaches. “The quality has dropped significantly over the years,” noted one traveller.
Some commuters asked the metro rail to devise alternative revenue strategies. “Officials should consider leasing commercial space at stations instead of shifting the burden onto passengers,” suggested Santosh Chaparala.
A minor section of passengers, however, expressed understanding of the metro rail's financial strain. They said a fare hike was reasonable and acceptable.
