MDS Quota Confusion Hits Students

As per the Supreme Court judgment in 2022, PG courses are supposed to implement rules for meritorious candidates from reserved candidates which allows students to contest from Open Categories

Hyderabad: Reserved category students trying to fill their application forms for postgraduate course of Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) are facing difficulties. The students have not been informed whether the university would be following reservation policy rules for meritorious candidates from reserved categories or for domicile based reservations. This has created a lot of confusion among students, especially those from poor backgrounds.

Dr Pawar Anand Kishore, who studied till Class 12 in Telangana and finished his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from Andhra Pradesh, said he was not able to fill his college name in the application form as there was no option for colleges from Andhra Pradesh. He had been relying on Telangana university and as a result, did not apply for Andhra colleges either. Now he has been stranded from both sides.

"Someone had told me that I would not be eligible for Telangana colleges as my BDS is from Andhra Pradesh. When I tried to fill the form, it did not show me the option for my college. Due to this, I was not able to apply," he said.

Dr A. Ram Subhash, wanting to apply from OBC category, found his name in the merit list against Open Category. "This leaves me at a disadvantage as I can get a better college in my own category. I am on the sixth rank in my category. I will lose seats in subsequent counsellings if I get that offer later," he said.

As per the Supreme Court judgment in 2022, PG courses are supposed to implement rules for meritorious candidates from reserved candidates which allows students to contest from Open Categories. It is unclear whether the university would be following these rules from this year. In the light of non-availability of seat matrix, students are unable to make informed decisions.

The Supreme Court had also put a stay on domicile based reservations in postgraduate courses earlier this year. "When contacted the university, they asked me to present a caste certificate from Telangana. I did my BDS from Telangana but I am a native of AP and my caste certificate is from there. Due to this, I cannot contest from my category," said Dr Ram Subhash.

When approached for clarifications, the KNRUHS Vice Chancellor Dr P.V. Nanda Kumar did not respond.
