Marredpally Residents Seek Name Change For New GHMC Ward

The Ward No. 196, named “Monda Market” in the GHMC preliminary notification issued on December 9, largely covers East and West Marredpally, Addagutta and adjoining neighbourhoods, according to the official boundary description

Hyderabad: Residents of Secunderabad have raised concerns over what they call a misleading name given to a newly proposed ward, arguing that it does not reflect the localities which comprise the ward.
The Ward No. 196, named “Monda Market” in the GHMC preliminary notification issued on December 9, largely covers East and West Marredpally, Addagutta and adjoining neighbourhoods, according to the official boundary description. Residents say Monda Market itself does not fall within the ward limits, leading to confusion over identity and representation.
A section of residents has submitted a formal objection to the civic body, urging it to rename the ward as Marredpally division before the final notification is issued. They argue that Marredpally accounts for the dominant geographical area and carries long-standing historical and civic significance in Secunderabad.
“The name does not match the geography described in the notification. When Monda Market is not part of the ward, calling it that is inaccurate and confusing for residents,” a representative of the group Ravinder Babu said. He added that ward names play a role in public identification, service delivery and civic records, and errors at this stage could create long-term issues.
Residents from East and West Marredpally also point out that the area has a distinct civic identity that predates recent delimitation exercises. “Marredpally is recognised across the city. Naming the ward after a locality that lies outside its boundaries ignores the people who actually live here,” another resident Meghna Yadav said, while representing Cantonment Vikas Manch.
The group has urged the GHMC to consider the objection while finalising ward names, saying the correction is administrative and does not require changes to boundaries. Civic officials are yet to respond publicly to the representation.
