Marital Discord Leads to Couple’s Suicide

Police have registered two separate cases and are investigating the sequence of events. The couple's bodies had been shifted to the Gandhi mortuary for postmortem examination and were later handed over to their families. Further investigation into the incident is underway.

Hyderabad: A married couple was found dead at separate locations in Pragathinagar in Bachupally. According to Bachupally SI Srikanth, the deceased, Velpuri Durgaragini, 22, a watchwoman residing at Shanthivanam B-Block Apartments, and her husband, Velpuri Durga Srinivasulu, died by suicide on Wednesday morning.

The couple got married in 2019 and had two children. Durgaragini’s body was found in her room around 10 am. According to a complaint filed by her mother, the couple had reportedly been quarrelling for over 10 days.

When Srinivasulu knocked, she did not open the door. He peeped through the window and found her dead. He then, with the help of neighbours, broke the door open and told Durgaragini's family about her death.

Shortly after, Srinivasulu left the scene and went to his sister's house. His sister's husband, Malleshwarapu Durgarao, Srinivasulu and a child then set out for the scene on two separate motorcycles. While Durgarao stopped at a petrol pump en route, he assumed Srinivasulu had gone ahead.

Later, as the family went ahead to Durgaragini’s house, Durgarao received a call around 1 pm from his 17-year-old son, informing him that Srinivasulu had died by suicide at Durgarao’s residence.

“He went back to his sister's house and took the extreme step there, fearing he'd be blamed by Durgaragini's parents for her death and would be beaten up,” the inspector said.

Police have registered two separate cases and are investigating the sequence of events. The couple's bodies had been shifted to the Gandhi mortuary for postmortem examination and were later handed over to their families. Further investigation into the incident is underway.

Minor girl forcibly married, 4 held

Hyderabad: A 13-year-old girl lodged a police complaint stating she was forcibly married to a 40-year-old man earlier this year in Nandigama. Police have booked four individuals—her mother, the groom Srinivas Goud, matchmaker Pintayya and priest Anjaneyulu—under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.

After her father passed away, the family had shifted to Nandigama a few months back from a remote Telangana district. Shravanthi was working as a labourer and the three were residing in a rented house, owned by Pintayya.

Intending to get her daughter married early, the mother asked Pintayya to look for matches despite the minor’s opposition. Pintayya introduced the minor’s mother to Srinivas Goud, 40, from Chevella. The mother allegedly forced the minor to get married, and, in May, the ceremony was performed at a temple in Nandigama in the presence of 20 people, which included the 40-year-old’s parents.

The minor was unhappy and frequently travelled to her mother’s house. During one such visit, she went to meet her former school teacher and confided in her about the issue, who suggested that she lodge a complaint with the police. Based on the complaint, the police filed the case and an investigation is underway.

“So far, there are no allegations of sexual or physical assault. Authorities said additional charges under Pocso may be added if necessary. Three accused are in custody and the groom is absconding,” said Nandigama police.
