Many File Nomination in Nizamabad, Kamareddy for Civic Polls

Police made tight security arrangements at nomination centres, while traffic was regulated to manage the rush

NIZAMABAD: Municipal election candidates filed their nominations in a festive atmosphere on the final day of filing on Friday. Candidates from the Congress, BJP, BRS, MIM and other parties submitted papers for municipal corporator and councillor posts in the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation and other municipalities across Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts.

Nomination activity was muted during the first two days in both districts, but picked up sharply on the last day, when a large number of candidates filed papers. Both general and women candidates submitted nominations. In several wards, around half a dozen candidates entered the fray for corporator and councillor posts, indicating keen contest.

Police made tight security arrangements at nomination centres, while traffic was regulated to manage the rush. After the filing deadline, candidates waited at the centres as parties prepared to issue B-forms to confirm official nominees.

Compared with the previous municipal elections, the ruling Congress is in an upbeat mood. In the last elections, the party won only two corporator posts out of 60 in Nizamabad. This time, the leadership is confident of winning a majority, or forming an alliance with the MIM to secure the mayor and deputy mayor posts.

The BJP is also aiming to secure a majority in the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation and a sizeable presence in other municipalities. Nizamabad MP Arvind Dharmapuri participated in the nomination process on Friday, with party leaders expressing confidence of improved performance.

The MIM, meanwhile, hopes to increase its tally of corporator and councillor seats in Nizamabad district. BRS leaders are also stepping up efforts to regain ground. Although the BRS did not win a majority in the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation during its earlier tenure, it had formed the council with MIM support and held the mayor’s post twice. With the changed political scenario, BRS leaders are hopeful of winning Bheemgal municipality and securing a significant number of seats in other towns.
