MANUU Students Knock Opposition’s Door

Rama Rao later told reporters that the government has made it a habit to grab land from univerisities and recalled how it wanted to take over and sell 400 acres of University of Hyderabad land.

HYDERABAD: A delegation of students approached BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao for support in their agitation against a state government move to take over 50 acres of land belonging to the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (Manuu). A delegation representing the MANUU students’ collective briefed Rama Rao on the developments, according group leader Mateen Ashraf.

Rama Rao later told reporters that the government has made it a habit to grab land from univerisities and recalled how it wanted to take over and sell 400 acres of University of Hyderabad land. “This is an illegal attempt to grab Manuu land, and our party will stand with the students. Once the BRS returns to power, we will provide more funds to Manuu to expand its academic activities,” he said.

“Reaching out to opposition parties is part of our strategy to build wider pressure on this issue,” Ashraf told reporters. Student representative Swaleh Ansari said that even without an elected union, students been raising concerns over the move.

Delegation member Afreen, a research scholar, spoke of the lack of women’s hostels on the campus and said this affected women students directly. She said Rama Rao informed the delegation during the conference that he would discuss the matter with the university Vice Chancellor.

The students’ collective said the political outreach would continue. “If the show cause notice is not withdrawn, a largescale protest will be organised,” the collective said. Even if the notice was revoked, it said, students would seek disclosure of land and infrastructure projects that are presently under process.
