Manhole Collapses, Sewage Spills in Khairatabad

The MD ordered officials to identify manholes that frequently overflow and mark them with red paint

HYDERABAD: HMWS&SB found accumulated silt in sewer lines leading to overflows and also a 15‑year‑old manhole collapsed in Khairatabad. Following this, board managing director K. Ashok Reddy asked officials to mark manholes that overflow frequently in red to pay them special attention.

Ashok Reddy was speaking after conducting a surprise inspection on Tuesday in Naveennagar Colony and Anandnagar under the Khairatabad circle to assess persistent sewage overflow problems. Examining the root causes of the difficulties faced by residents and the stagnant sewage on roads, he found found that accumulated silt in sewer lines was leading to frequent overflows in several localities.

He directed officials to undertake special de‑silting drives in problem‑prone areas. Every manhole, he instructed, should be inspected and de‑silted at least once a week. Officials were also asked to maintain online records detailing the sewer lines de‑silted, the quantity of silt removed, and maintenance works carried out.

The MD ordered officials to identify manholes that frequently overflow and mark them with red paint. This, he said, would help authorities quickly identify problematic manholes and implement permanent solutions. He also instructed officials to focus on areas that receive frequent complaints through customer care services. Such locations should be reviewed weekly to identify causes and resolve recurring issues.

During the field inspection, officials discovered that a deep manhole constructed nearly 15 years ago had collapsed, obstructing the flow of sewage and contributing to repeated overflow issues in the area. Officials said reconstructing the damaged manhole would significantly help resolve the recurring sewage overflow problem.
