Man Killed, Wife Hurt: NH Horror

Abdullapurmet inspector Ashok Reddy said the deceased was identified as Kunchapu Srinivas, a resident of Yashoda Nagar, Inamguda, and the survivor as his wife Kunchapu Laxmi, 39.

Hyderabad: In a hit-and-run incident on Sunday evening, a 48-year-old labourer died and his wife was left severely injured after an unidentified container lorry hit them while they were crossing the NH-65 in Inamguda village. Their teenaged children who were with them escaped without injury.

Abdullapurmet inspector Ashok Reddy said the deceased was identified as Kunchapu Srinivas, a resident of Yashoda Nagar, Inamguda, and the survivor as his wife Kunchapu Laxmi, 39.

The couple along with their children Rajeshwari, 19, and Rambabu, 17, had gone to Keesara along with relatives during the day. “They were dropped off near a petrol bunk around 7.30 pm and were attempting to cross the highway when the accident took place," the inspector.

The lorry which was reportedly speeding, rammed into the couple and the driver drove away without stopping. Srinivas died on the spot due to severe injuries, while Laxmi suffered bleeding injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment and was stated to be in a critical condition. The children escaped.

Abdullapurmet police registered a case and are scanning CCTV footage from the vicinity to trace the vehicle. The body of the deceased was shifted to Osmania General Hospital for postmortem examination. Further investigation is underway.

The Abdullapurmet police station limits cover an eight-kilometre stretch of National Highway-65, a zone that witnesses traffic congestion and speeding, especially during weekends. Inspector Ashok Reddy noted that accidents are usually taking place during the weekends due to higher public movement.

“Many people from nearby districts like Khammam, Vijayawada, and Guntur travel back to the city on Sunday evenings. Along with local residents stepping out, this is increasing vehicular flow,” he said. While drunk driving is one if the cause, the inspector pointed out that driver fatigue especially among those lorry drivers who take long trips is a more frequent cause. "Sleepy drivers are a bigger threat than drunk ones on this stretch," he added.

Officer Reddy also added that recently, 35 cameras were installed in the jurisdiction and the highway after the residents contributed as an initiative, under the leadership of Rachakonda police commissioner G. Sudheer Babu.

Teachers Demand PRC Implementation

Hyderabad:With over two years having passed since the Pay Revision Commission (PRC) deadline, teachers have called on the government to implement the revised pay scales from July 2023 and immediately release all pending post-retirement benefits for those who retired after March 2024. The demand comes amid growing frustration over delays in fulfilling earlier commitments.

At a state-level meeting held on Sunday, members of the Telangana State United Teachers’ Federation (TSUTF) said that employees and teachers have waited long enough for the PRC report to be submitted and implemented. Federation’s president Chava Ravi said teachers were forced to fight under the previous government due to repeated delays and are hopeful the current administration does not repeat the same approach. “If this government too fails, teachers and employees will be left with no choice but to protest,” he said.

The union pointed out that while the state Cabinet had promised to release `700 crore every month to clear retirement dues, only `180 crore was released last month. Teachers demanded that the government stand by its decision and release the remaining amount without delay.

Several other concerns were also raised at the meeting. Teachers urged the government to scientifically revise working hours for Gurukul institutions and ensure that salaries for model school and Gurukul teachers are paid under the ‘010 budget’ head. They also demanded that KGBV, URS, and Samagra Shiksha employees be given basic pay, and vacancies in key education positions such as DEOs, deputy EOs, MEOs, and DIET lecturers be filled at the earliest. Supervision of schools, they said, must be carried out only by designated education officials.

The delay in completing transfers and promotions, which were promised during the summer, also drew criticism. Teachers demanded that the schedule for transfers be released immediately and renewed their call for scrapping the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). They also sought restoration of the old pension scheme for 2003 DSC teachers.

Concerns were raised about the future of public education, with the union pointing to the declining enrolment in government schools. They said restoring trust among parents is the state’s responsibility and stressed the need to protect village schools. While the move to introduce pre-primary and Classes 11 and 12 in high schools was welcomed, teachers insisted that adequate infrastructure must be provided before these new classes are launched. They also urged the government to prevent corporate-style education from making inroads into school education, as it has in intermediate institutions.

The union declared its full support for the nationwide strike on July 9 called by central trade unions. It also announced plans to take part in the silver jubilee celebrations of the School Teachers Federation of India (STFI) in Kolkata in August, and to hold a week-long campaign across Telangana from August 1 against NEP and CPS.

Auto Scheme Launched for ORR Residents

Hyderabad: The government has launched the registration process for new LPG, CNG, and electric autorickshaws under GO 263, aimed at supporting poor families residing within the Outer Ring Road (ORR). The transport department rolled out a dedicated software system on Sunday, enabling eligible citizens to register through any authorised autorickshaw dealer across the state.

This follows the state’s decision to relax permit restrictions within ORR limits. As per the guidelines issued by transport commissioner Surendra Mohan, individuals residing within ORR, as reflected in their driving licence and supported by address proof, are eligible to apply. Acceptable documents include Aadhaar, voter ID, bank passbook, or electricity bill.

Each eligible applicant can register for only one autorickshaw. Those who already own a three-wheeler will be disqualified. An affidavit confirming this must also be submitted to the dealer at the time of application.

The allotment will follow a first-come, first-served basis, and approved applicants must complete registration at the concerned RTO within 60 days, failing which the permit will be cancelled.
