8 students booked in varsity drug racket
Just days after the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) uncovered a two-year-long drug racket operating at a private university campus, police said several students had escaped soon after learning drug tests were carried out in the university. Officials said at least 50 students were under their radar, many of whom either fled or began consuming excess water to dilute traces before drug testing.
So far, eight out of 28 students tested have returned positive for drug use. “These 28 had made several transactions with the accused,” an official told Deccan Chronicle.
According to investigators, the network pushed OG weed, ganja and MDMA through courier parcels and local contacts. Parcels were traced to Rajesh Enterprises (Sree Maruti Couriers) during the Malnadu Restaurant case. OG weed, bought for around Rs 30,000 per ounce in Delhi, was sold at Rs 2,500 per gram in Hyderabad, with some students reportedly spending up to Rs 2,500 a day.
While reports claimed drugs worth Rs 100 crore were procured in the span of two years, officials have denied this claim. “There are a lot of transactions traced to several individuals. We are yet to ascertain the exact amount.”
Officials criticised the university for not conducting hostel checks and courier services due to lapses in parcel screening. They also said that some security staff from the university are known to be involved in the easy clearance of such parcels to students. “A lab assistant from the university has also been identified as a consumer, procuring drugs from the same racket. We are investigating further and holding meetings with the university,” the official said.
On August 25, the EAGLE team raided a flat in Shivalayam Colony in Suraram and seized 1.15 kg of ganja, 47 g of OG weed, 28 packing pouches, a weighing machine and several mobile phones. Four persons were arrested: Nevelle Tongbram, who managed storage and payments; Ambati Ganesh, responsible for repackaging; Boosa Shiva Kumar, a ganja supplier from Bidar; and Mohd Ashar Jawed Khan, a campus distributor who sourced drugs from Delhi and Gurugram.
