Nalgonda: A 50-year-old farmer died while trying to save his grandson who fell into a pit formed around a borewell in an agricultural field at Vutlapalli in Miryalaguda mandal of Nalgonda district on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Katte Venkanna. Police said a pit, over 20 feet deep and filled with loose mud, had formed around the borewell due to soil collapse.
According to officials, Venkanna had gone to the field with his grandchildren for agricultural work when his four-year-old grandson, Hemanth, accidentally fell into the pit, which was covered with grass.
On noticing the incident, Venkanna rushed to rescue the child but slipped and fell into the pit headfirst. The granddaughter alerted passersby, who rushed to the spot and began rescue efforts.
Police, revenue and fire services personnel reached the site and initiated a rescue operation. A local youth, Chinthakayala Saidulu, was lowered into the pit with a rope and brought both victims out.
Venkanna, who developed breathing complications, died while being shifted to a hospital in Miryalaguda. The child is undergoing treatment and is reported to be stable.
Saidulu said he found Venkanna at a depth of about 10 feet and the child at around 15 feet and brought them out one after the other.
Miryalaguda DSP K. Rajasekhara Raju said the borewell was in use for agricultural purposes and was not abandoned. He added that the pit has since been filled with sand.
