According to police, family members noticed that he was appearing depressed and withdrawn over the past few months. When enquired, he disclosed to his family members that he was addicted to online betting and had borrowed around ₹3 lakh from friends and others to carry on.
Police said that Pavan later informed his parents that he had cleared debts on his own and asked them not to worry. Relieved by his assurance, the family believed he had come out of the betting habits and was returning to normal life.
“They were happy that he had acknowledged the problem and tried to resolve it,” a police official, said.
However, the situation took a tragic turn on Tuesday, when his parents and brother went out for work. Pavan died by suicide at his home.
His father, who runs the fodder shop located on the ground floor of the house, called out his name for lunch but there was no response. When he went upstairs to check, he found his son was lying motionless.
The family told police that they suspect that Pavan may have resumed betting and possibly suffered fresh losses, which could have driven him into distress.
