Tech firm duped of ₹5.56 crore in cyber training scam

Hyderabad Central Crime Station (CCS) registered a case against Kondamudi Venkata Naga Prameel Arjun on charges of cheating, impersonation, forgery and criminal deception after a city based technology company alleged he duped it of over ₹5.56 crore through a fraudulent cybersecurity training scheme.

According to the FIR, the accused introduced himself in January 2024 as director of the National Information and Cyber Security Council (NICC), claiming it was a premier institution under the Union ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY). The company said he used brochures, public speeches, website content and photographs with national leaders to project NICC as a government backed entity.

He allegedly promised to establish centres of excellence, provide 2,000 cybersecurity training logins and secure government grants worth ₹2 crore for laboratories. Believing the claims, the company transferred ₹5.56 crore to accounts specified by him and spent nearly ₹3 crore on setting up training centres and infrastructure.

The FIR stated that he failed to deliver training programmes, login credentials or grants despite repeated assurances. He allegedly reimbursed certain marketing expenses to maintain legitimacy while avoiding refund demands.

The complainant later verified his claims through an RTI with MeitY, which denied any association with NICC. The complaint further alleged that he falsely projected links with government agencies and senior constitutional authorities to gain credibility and induce investments.

CCS has taken up the investigation.

Borabanda Suicide Not Linked to Electoral Roll Revision, Clarifies Hyderabad Police

A 52-year-old man died by suicide at his residence in Borabanda. Police quoting from family sources said that he had been under stress and the suicide was not related to the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral roll. There was no evidence to establish such a link despite claims, police said.

According to police, the man’s body was found at his house. Police said a case had been registered and an investigation was underway to ascertain the circumstances that led to his death.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Borabanda sub-inspector Y. Kashaiah said the investigation had not found any material linking the death to the electoral roll revision exercise. "We are not aware of any issue relating to the electoral rolls in this case," he said.

The officer said no suicide note was recovered from the house. During the inquiry, family members informed police that the deceased was depressed for a few days. They did not produce any evidence suggesting that the SIR exercise had directly contributed to his death.

Police said the investigation was covering all possible angles and that the reason behind the suicide could be established only after collecting evidence and recording statements from family members and other witnesses.
