Hyderabad: A man and his teenage daughter were electrocuted just past midnight on Saturday while attempting to clear rain debris outside their residence in Alwal, coming into contact with a snapped live wire. This is the second incident of rain-related electrocution deaths in the city in a week.
The deceased in Saturday’s incident were identified as Ch. Sandeep, 44, and his daughter Akshaya, residents of Telecom Colony in Alwal. Sandeep’s wife Shweta was injured. According to police, the incident occurred shortly after heavy overnight rain and gusty winds resulted in tree branches falling on the road in front of their house, bringing down a power line.
The family stepped out of their house at around 1 am to clear fallen branches and accumulated debris near their residence and move their car to a safer place. Police said that Shweta first suffered a brief electric shock in the attempt.
Seeing Shweta struggle, her daughter Akshaya stepped in to help her and got electrocuted. Sandeep stepped forward to rescue Akshaya, and came into contact with the live electric wire that was lying concealed amid rain-soaked debris. Both died on the spot. Shweta who suffered burns was shifted to hospital for treatment. Police said her statement may help establish the exact sequence of events.
Officials said that it is unclear how exactly the father and daughter came in contact with the live wire and were probing multiple possibilities, including whether an exposed electrical cable had mixed with the fallen branches unnoticed.
The bodies of the victims were moved to Gandhi Hospital for postmortem and handed over to the family for final rites, after the autopsy.
The tragedy comes amid increasing concerns over rain-related electrocution incidents in Hyderabad. Four days ago, at Bandlaguda, Zafar, 25, and a 16-year-old resident of Chandrayangutta, alighted from an autorickshaw and came into contact with a live electric wire that had snapped due to the heavy rain, and died on the spot.
