Malkajgiri Commissionerate Launches Special Empowerment Programme for Transgenders

Initiative offers exam coaching and hostel accommodation to help candidates join police force

In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Telangana, the Malkajgiri police commissionerate launched a special empowerment programme to help transgenders secure positions as constables and sub-inspectors in the state police.

The initiative will provide four months of specialised written examination coaching and hostel accommodation to 20 transgender aspirants preparing for the 2026 recruitment process. The department for transgender persons has sanctioned `3.5 lakh towards coaching and accommodation expenses following a request from the Malkajgiri police commissioner G. Sumathi.

Sumathi inaugurated the programme and distributed study material covering Indian and Telangana history, arithmetic and reasoning, geography, current affairs and economics to the selected candidates.

The anti-human trafficking unit (AHTU) of the women safety wing (WSW) police is coordinating the initiative in collaboration with Unique Coaching Centre and Kalpana Hostel in Dilsukhnagar. A dedicated WhatsApp group comprising candidates, police officers, departmental representatives, coaching faculty and hostel management has been formed to monitor their preparation and provide support.

The WSW will also explore suitable duty adjustments, subject to departmental rules, to enable serving traffic assistants from the transgender community to attend coaching and physical fitness training.

Sumathi urged the aspirants to prepare with discipline and dedication, expressing hope that they would successfully join the police force.
