Lorry Engulfed in Flames in Nirmal, Driver Burnt Alive

Fire-fighters said the fire could have first originated from the AC cabin of Rajput and subsequently spread to the two lorries, which were gutted completely later

Hyderabad: A lorry driver Jawhar Rajput was burnt alive in his vehicle after it caught fire in Nirmal early Thursday. His brother Ravath, however, escaped unhurt in the incident.

A lorry loaded with jowar bags was heading to Hyderabad and at the same time another lorry driven by 40-year-old Rajput was on the way to Hyderabad with a load of potatoes. Minutes after reaching Metpally in Nirmal Rajput rammed into the jowar loaded lorry from behind at high speed.

As a result, flames engulfed the two lorries. As Rajput got stuck at the steering in the driver’s cabin because of the speed at which he hit the lorry in front of him. He could not open the door in the cabin on the right side as it was completely damaged.

He tried to escape but flames engulfed the vehicle making it difficult for him to come out of the cabin even as Ravath raised an alarm to rescue his brother. As the intensity of flames was high, Rajput burnt alive in the lorry, said Nirmal Station Fire Officer D Shivaji.

Ravath then called the fire control room around 5.30 am. A fire tender from Nirmal fire station was rushed to the spot and the flames were doused within an hour. The driver of another vehicle escaped with injuries. He is undergoing treatment at the government hospital in Nirmal.

Rajput is a resident of Neradigonda village in Adilabad district. Fire-fighters said the fire could have first originated from the AC cabin of Rajput and subsequently spread to the two lorries, which were damaged completely later.
