Learning levels dip in Andhra Pradesh & Telangana: ASER 2024

Hyderabad: The Annual Status of Education Report (Rural) 2024, based on data collected till January 10, 2025, has revealed a concerning decline in learning levels among children in government schools of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Key findings:
School Enrollment: While enrolment in government schools in both states showed a significant improvement between 2018 and 2022, it declined sharply in 2024. In Andhra Pradesh, enrolment dropped from 70.8% in 2022 to 61.8% in 2024, and in Telangana, it fell from 70.1% to 59.8%.
School Attendance: Despite a slight dip in 2024, school attendance in Andhra Pradesh remained relatively high at 89.8%, compared to 73.5% in Telangana.
Basic Literacy & Numeracy:
Class III: A worrying trend emerged in basic literacy and numeracy among Class III students. In both states, the percentage of children who could read Class II level text and perform basic subtraction declined significantly between 2018 and 2022, and while some improvement was observed in 2024, the levels remained concerning.
Class V: Similar trends were observed in Class V, with a significant drop in the percentage of students who could read Class II level text and perform division between 2018 and 2022.
Class VIII: The report highlighted a significant decline in the ability of Class VIII students in both states to read Class II level text and perform division.
