Lagacharla Industrial Estate to Commence Operations

Spread across 1,200 acres acquired in Lagacharla, Polepalli and Hakimpet of Dudyal mandal, the project has entered the implementation stage.

Hyderabad:The state government's ambitious multi-purpose industrial estate at Lagacharla in Vikarabad district, a flagship project of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, is set to take off with the government initiating the process of land allotment and signing memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with companies to begin operations.

Spread across 1,200 acres acquired in Lagacharla, Polepalli and Hakimpet of Dudyal mandal, the project has entered the implementation stage. Official sources said nearly 500 acres had been earmarked for industries after allocating 250 acres for an education hub, where construction activity has already commenced. Work has also recently begun on a 440-bed super-specialty hospital.

The education hub will house a Young India Residential School, a Sainik School, engineering, medical, nursing and polytechnic colleges, an Advanced Training Institute and other educational institutions, in line with the Chief Minister's vision of transforming Kodangal into a major education centre. Revanth Reddy represents the Kodangal Assembly constituency.

The remaining land is being allotted to industries. According to official sources, 419 acres have been earmarked for an industrial park under the Centre's Bhavya Scheme, 66 acres to the Birla Group and 37 acres to a palm oil processing company. Soil testing has been completed in the allotted areas and construction work is expected to begin shortly.

With expectations of attracting nearly 100 companies to the industrial estate, the government is also expanding its land bank. It has decided to acquire another 110 acres of assigned land, for which surveys have been completed. Simultaneously, efforts are underway to acquire 374 acres in Irlapalli, Santrakunta thanda and Nanya Nayak thanda. Compensation cheques are expected to be distributed to affected farmers shortly.

The government believes the industrial estate will transform the backward region, which has long witnessed large-scale migration in search of employment. Local youth have welcomed the project, expressing hope that new industries will provide jobs closer to home and improve their economic prospects.

The project marks a major shift from the government's original proposal. In 2024, the state government had planned to establish a pharma cluster in the area and initiated land acquisition. The proposal triggered widespread protests from farmers and local residents, who feared pollution and environmental damage from pharmaceutical industries.

A public hearing on land acquisition at Lagacharla in November 2024 turned violent, with protesters attacking officials, including then Vikarabad collector Prateek Jain. The ensuing legal case led the High Court to grant an interim stay on land acquisition, prompting the government to abandon the pharma cluster proposal.

Following the controversy, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy announced that the acquired land would instead be used for pollution-free industries under a multi-purpose industrial corridor.
