Lack of Bridges on Streams, Rivulets in Interiors Posing Threat to Life

Monsoon-swollen streams leave villagers stranded and cut off from vital healthcare

Adilabad: People in interior areas of the erstwhile Adilabad district are facing many problems due to either lack of bridges over streams and rivulets. This is posing a threat to the lives of people, especially during the monsoon.

Villagers of Kolamguda in Thummaguda gram panchayat of Kerameri mandal recently faced a lot of hardship in shifting a seventh-month pregnant woman, Kodapa Rameshwari to the government hospital in Kerameri following ill-health on August 12.

The Goriyaguda stream had been overflowing. With no other choice, family members and some youth risked their lives by carrying the pregnant woman on a stretcher-like bed on their shoulders and finally reaching the hospital.

People of Kolamgugda, Goriyaguda, Ravujiguda, and Themlaguda complain that successive governments, including the present one, have failed to construct a bridge over the stream despite repeated appeals. People of interior villages are facing similar problems in Gadiguda, Narnoor, Indravelli, Sirikonda, Utnoor, Jainoor, Lingapur, Sirpur (U), Tiryani, Sirpur (T), and Kotapalli mandals in the erstwhile Adilabad district.

Rathod Ramesh of Anarpalli village said the state government should replace the existing low-level bridges with new high-level bridges on streams and rivulets.

The proposal for construction of a bridge connecting Kerameri and Lokari has been pending for many years. It is high time for district officials to build or complete the unfinished bridges to improve the road connectivity to interior villages in Adilabad and Komaram Bheem Asifabad districts.
