Driver Arrested in Sumanth Extortion Case

A special team probing the case arrested the driver near Sumanth’s house in Tellapur

HYDERABAD: City police on Sunday arrested the driver of minister Konda Surekha’s former associate Sumanth, who is facing criminal cases for alleged extortion and physical attacks. A special team probing the case arrested the driver near Sumanth’s house in Tellapur. Police said the name of the arrested accused would be revealed later.

Police said they were acting on a complaint received from realtor Gongidi Harikrishna on August 20, who stated that Sumanth, former officer on special duty to minister Surekha, and his associates had illegally confined him, attacked him with iron rods and demanded ₹10 crore extortion. Following Harikrishna’s complaint, Medipally police lodged a Zero FIR and transferred the case to Jubilee Hills police under whose limits the alleged crime occurred.

Investigators found that Sumanth had called Harikrishna to the office of his aide at Jubilee Hills at 9.45 pm on August 20. Harikrishna reached the place along with his friend Kiran, who is a witness in the case. Sumanth allegedly threatened and abused the complainant and assaulted him with an iron rod. Harikrishna reportedly suffered a fracture to his left hand, bleeding injuries and vomited blood.

Kiran and Harikrishna called the police after which two Jubilee Hills constables reached the scene and shifted them to a hospital. Harikrishna lodged a fresh complaint alleging physical assault, threat to kill and illegal confinement. Based on his complaint, police booked Sumanth, his associates Prashanth, Arun Kumar Reddy, Karthik, Mahender Reddy and others.

Harikrishna also told police that he had received a call from Sumanth on July 30, asking him to meet urgently.
