Kazipet–Vijayawada Triple Railway Line Project Nears Completion

The project, being executed at an estimated cost of ₹3,100 crore, is aimed at enhancing capacity on the busy Vijayawada–Kazipet section of the grand trunk route, a key rail corridor linking North and South India and providing connectivity between the eastern and western parts of the country.

SCR officials said the commissioned sections include Vijayawada–Gangineni (36 km), Gangineni–Dornakal (89 km) and Mahabubabad–Kazipet (70 km).

Work on the remaining 25-km Dornakal–Mahabubabad stretch is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed in the coming months. Once commissioned, the entire Kazipet–Vijayawada corridor will have triple-line connectivity and full electrification.

Railway officials said the project would ease congestion on the existing double-line network, improving the movement of passenger and freight trains.

The enhanced capacity is expected to facilitate faster transportation of coal to thermal power stations and improve freight movement for cement and other industries.

Officials said the additional line would also enable South Central Railway to introduce more passenger and freight services by reducing traffic bottlenecks. Full electrification of the route is expected to reduce diesel consumption, lower fuel costs and minimise carbon emissions.

Meanwhile, South Central Railway (SCR) has completed the Kazipet–Balharshah Triple Railway Line and Electrification Project. The final 11-km stretch between Asifabad and Sirpur Kaghaznagar was commissioned on July 22, completing the 203-km project.

The Kazipet–Balharshah project, launched in 2012 at an estimated cost of nearly ₹3,000 crore, is expected to strengthen rail connectivity and increase line capacity across Telangana and neighbouring Maharashtra.
