Kazipet-Ghatkesar Multi-Tracking Gets Centre’s Nod
Rs 2,419 crore project to expand rail capacity along 110-km stretch
Warangal:The Centre has given the green signal for a major expansion of railway infrastructure between Kazipet and Ghatkesar, by approving a 110-km multi-tracking project at an estimated cost of Rs 2,419 crore.
The project, covering the Secunderabad (Ghatkesar)-Kazipet section, was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday. The railway authorities have set a target of completing the project by 2029-30.
The multi-tracking project is expected to ease congestion on the busy Kazipet-Ghatkesar corridor and significantly enhance the capacity to operate both passenger and freight trains. It is also expected to improve train punctuality and operational efficiency on the strategically important route connecting southern and central India.
The approval assumes significance for Kazipet, a major railway junction in Telangana. The third-line works between Kazipet-Vijayawada and Kazipet-Balharshah have already been completed. With the Centre now clearing the multi-tracking project towards Ghatkesar, the capacity of the key railway corridor will receive another major boost.
Railway officials said the process for inviting tenders would be taken up as part of the next stage of the project.
The five multi-tracking projects approved by the Centre together cover nearly 540km across 17 districts in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The projects are expected to benefit around 52 lakh people and improve rail connectivity to nearly 2,121 villages.
Besides strengthening passenger connectivity, the additional rail capacity is expected to boost freight movement and help reduce logistics costs.
