Kavitha’s MLC Resignation Sparks Political Debate in Nizamabad

Political circles await clarity as acceptance of her MLC resignation sparks debate

Nizamabad: The proposed resignation of Nizamabad MLC Kalvakuntla Kavitha has turned controversial, triggering intense debate in political circles across the undivided Nizamabad district. Kavitha has announced that she will visit the Legislative Council on January 5 to formally finalise her resignation.

Political observers say uncertainty over the acceptance of her resignation has created doubts, as the development carries wider political implications. Kavitha was elected as MLC after R. Bhupathi Reddy resigned from the BRS in October 2020. She was subsequently elected unanimously in December 2021 as the MLC representing urban and rural local bodies, including MPPs, ZPTCs, municipal corporators and councillors.

Amid growing internal differences within the BRS, Kavitha announced her decision to resign from the MLC post. However, as a fresh election without voters from the same electoral college is not feasible at present, her resignation has become a matter of political contention. Leaders and party workers in the undivided Nizamabad district are keenly watching whether the resignation will be accepted.

In recent months, Kavitha has openly criticised the BRS leadership, initially targeting her brother and BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao, and later former minister and MLA T. Harish Rao. Following these developments, the BRS suspended her from the party. Since then, she has been carrying out political activities under the banner of Telangana Jagruthi.

Kavitha was first elected as a MP from Nizamabad in 2014 but suffered a defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Her MLC position later emerged as an alternative political platform. With her resignation now under question, the issue has assumed significance within the state’s political landscape.
