Karnan Unveils Report on Energy Efficiency in Hyderabad’s Climate Action Strategy
The Commissioner observed that energy efficiency alone contributes over 40 per cent towards addressing climate change, making it a global necessity

Hyderabad: On the occasion of National Energy Conservation Week from December 14 to 20, GHMC Commissioner R. V. Karnan unveiled a comprehensive report highlighting the role of energy efficiency in Hyderabad’s climate action strategy. The report was prepared by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) Media Adviser A. Chandra Sekhara Reddy, in collaboration with EESL and the State Designated Agency TSREDCO.
Addressing the gathering, the Commissioner observed that energy efficiency alone contributes over 40 per cent towards addressing climate change, making it a global necessity. He underlined that unchecked human activity has resulted in air, water and soil pollution, adversely affecting wildlife, human health and sustainable development.
Emphasizing social responsibility, he stated that GHMC is intensifying public awareness initiatives not only on energy efficiency and conservation, but also on urban cleanliness, waste management and environmental protection.
The Commissioner also appreciated the cool roof pilot project at the University of Hyderabad, implemented by TSREDCO with financial support from BEE. Covering an area of approximately 36,746 square feet, the project represents a significant step towards creating a climate-resilient and energy-efficient campus, with an estimated annual energy saving of 7,000 kWh.
With the support of the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Department, Government of Telangana, EESL has completed the retrofitting of 5.53 lakh LED street lights in GHMC areas, out of a total 15.41 lakh street lights across Telangana. The GHMC reiterated that it remains firmly committed to aligning urban governance with national climate goals, global best practices and citizen-centric sustainability outcomes.
