Justice Ramana Backs Caste Census
Justice Ramana said that caste and caste-based discrimination was a harsh reality in society.

Hyderabad: Welcoming the Central government's decision to conduct a caste enumeration along with the general census, former Chief Justice of India Justice N.V. Ramana on Thursday felt that it was a much-needed step, though much delayed. In a statement, Justice Ramana said that caste and caste-based discrimination was a harsh reality in society. “For too long a time we have preferred to live in denial. It is time to get our act together,” he said.
“The decision to do a head count with caste as identity is a right step in the right direction,” Justice Ramana said. “For a vast and diverse country like India, unless we gather authentic data it is not possible to view the big picture and formulate a scientific strategy for all round progress of our people and our nation.”
He said he believed that the caste census would go a long way in bridging the socio-economic divide and grant the rightful share to all sections of society in power and prosperity. “I also hope that the next census will factor in every possible social index so as to make it a comprehensive exercise aimed at common good," the former Chief Justice of India said.
