Joginis, transgenders marry Lord Shiva on Rama Navami in Vemulawada

KARIMNAGAR: In a grand celebration marking the Sri Rama Navami festival, the celestial wedding of Lord Sri Rama with Sita Devi was performed with elaborate rituals at the Sri Raja Rajeshwara Swamy Temple in Vemulawada.
The temple, renowned for its unique customs, follows a dual celebratory tradition. While the divine wedding of Sri Parvati Raja Rajeswara Swamy is conducted the day after the Kamadahana during the Holi festival, the celestial marriage of Lord Rama and Sita Devi takes centre stage on Sri Rama Navami. During both occasions, thousands of devotees — particularly members of the transgender community, who dress as brides and grooms representing Lord Shiva and Parvati — participate in the ceremonies.
The Kalyana Mahotsavam was marked by the resonant chanting of Vedic mantras as priests performed the sacred rituals.
The ceremony saw many Joginis, transgenders, and other followers who arrived at the temple dressed as Shiva-Parvati in the symbolic marriage rituals.
They first get blessed by the Jangam community, transform into Shiva-Parvati figures, and then conduct the marriage ceremony themselves.
Many worshippers adorned Rudraksha necklaces and regarded the Trishul as their symbolic spouse as they engaged in the rituals.
Following the ceremony, participants joyfully scattered grains from their jholas on the deities. Devotees also flocked to collect turmeric and Talambralu — items believed to bring prosperity and health when kept at home.
To accommodate the large number of attendees, temple authorities arranged temporary shelters to protect devotees from the scorching sun. LED TV screens were strategically placed at various locations, allowing everyone to witness the celestial wedding from different vantage points.
