Jobless Youths Cheated Over Jobs In Maldives

On Friday, the victims released audio recordings on social media detailing the fraud. Manchala Srikanth of Lingapur village, who arrived in May, said he realised the agent’s deception after three months.

NIZAMABAD: Unemployed youths from Kamareddy district allege that a travel agent cheated them by promising jobs in the Maldives. The agent collected ₹1.5 lakh from each of about 15 youths and arranged their travel. Once in the Maldives, the migrants discovered they were paid far less than promised.

Reportedly, many youths from Kamareddy, Medak, and Rajanna Sircilla districts trusted this Kamareddy town agent and paid between ₹1.3 lakh and ₹1.5 lakh for Maldivian employment. The agent had guaranteed a monthly salary of $400, plus overtime and service charges.

On Friday, the victims released audio recordings on social media detailing the fraud. Manchala Srikanth of Lingapur village, who arrived in May, said he realised the agent’s deception after three months. “During visa processing and contract signing, we noticed changes in the salary and other terms,” he said.

“When we confronted the agent, he told us to wait two more months,” Srikanth added. “Although the contract stated a $400 salary, the company is paying only $300. There are no overtime or service charges.” After two months of repeated pleas, the agent began ignoring and threatening them, he lamented.

“We have evidence of the agent’s assurances, including call recordings about salary, service, and overtime charges,” Srikanth said. The group urged Kamareddy district police to take strict action against the agent and warned other unemployed youths to be wary of travel agents promising overseas jobs, particularly in the Maldives.
