JNTU-H students fear marks fixed

Several students have alleged serious irregularities in the examination branch of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad (JNTU-H), including manipulation of student marks and misuse of database access.

Hyderabad:Several students have alleged serious irregularities in the examination branch of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad (JNTU-H), including manipulation of student marks and misuse of database access.

At a press meet held in front of the university’s administrative building, student leaders including Javaji Dilip and R. Naik questioned the university’s handling of examination results and administrative transparency.

Led by the Students Protection Forum, they demanded that newly-appointed Vice Chancellor Prof. Kishan Kumar Reddy should take an impartial stand and address growing concerns around result manipulation and delayed justice.

The controversy centres around claims that two students’ marks were altered in the database — one reportedly had a zero changed to 14, and another allegedly had marks in three subjects changed from zero to 18, 17, and 18. Student leaders said such changes were made using the Controller of Examinations’ (CoE) password, which should be traceable.

The forum also objected to the reappointment of Prof. Nagaratna as CoE. She had earlier been removed from the role following a preliminary inquiry into irregularities by the former vice-chancellor and Higher Education Council chairman Balakrishna Reddy, they claimed . Her reinstatement was allegedly influenced by political pressure, with student leaders questioning whether political support should override prior disciplinary action.

“These aren’t just administrative lapses—this is about the integrity of the university’s examination system,” a student leader Shiv Brahman said, pointing to the need for full disclosure of an internal committee report that was promised to students after the 2024 incident. The report has not been made public to date.

The forum also criticised the Vice Chancellor’s inaccessibility, stating that students have repeatedly sought time to present their grievances, but have been unable to secure a meeting. They said this went against the spirit of student-focused governance advocated by the state government.

Students alleged that the examination branch held back a student’s original degree certificate, even though senior officials had instructed that it be issued. They claimed some staff provided access to certificate application portals under unofficial instructions, and called for investigation into the call data and authorisation behind such decisions.

The Forum has now demanded a forensic audit of JNTU-H’s exam database for the past ten years, arguing that only an independent review can expose the extent of tampering and restore credibility to the university’s examination process. They urged the administration to identify the real culprits behind result manipulation and make the findings public.

They also flagged what they termed as unfair treatment of a tribal woman professor who was removed while another—allegedly supported by a political leader—was reinstated, demanding a review of both decisions in the interest of equity and institutional integrity.
