Jagtial: Four Farm Workers Killed as Tractor Overturns After Turmeric Harvest

Accident at Mogilipeta leaves four dead on the spot; injured shifted to hospital

Jagtial: A road accident claimed the lives of three women farm labourers and a young teenager while they were returning home after a day’s labour in the fields.

The tractor they were travelling in lost control and overturned in Mogilipet village of Mallapur mandal in Jagtial district on Tuesday.

According to police, a group of 15 agricultural labourers were harvesting turmeric. After the work, they boarded a tractor heavily loaded with the harvested crop, to return to their homes. As the vehicle reached the outskirts of Mogilipet, the driver lost control, causing the tractor to flip over.

Of the 15 women, four were crushed under the weight of the overturned vehicle. They were Sayamma (35), Lalitha (42), Gangu (45) and Vaishanvi (13), residents of Mogilipet village. The others received minor injuries.

Alerted by screams of the survivors, locals rushed to the spot and attempted a rescue operation. They pulled the victims from beneath the wreckage. The injured were rushed to a government hospital in 108 ambulances for emergency treatment.

The police reached the accident site shortly after the incident and oversaw the shifting of bodies for post-mortem and helped clear the road for traffic.

Investigations suggest that the combination of a heavy load and a possible mechanical failure or sharp turn led to the tragedy.
