It’s Official: GHMC is Now India’s Biggest Civic Body
The erstwhile GHMC was spread across 650 square kilometres with six zones, 30 circles and 150 wards.

Hyderabad: The state government on Thursday notified the extended Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), officially unveiling the country’s largest municipal corporation and marking the boundaries of 300 newly-delimited wards.
The government has created a new post — special chief secretary, metropolitan area and urban development (HMDA limits) — to oversee developmental needs of the city and appointed Jayesh Ranjan to new post. The government has also appointed commissioners to the new zones.
The erstwhile GHMC was spread across 650 square kilometres with six zones, 30 circles and 150 wards. The enlarged GHMC will have 12 zones, 60 circles and 300 wards, spread over 2,000 square kilometres. With this, the GHMC will be as big as Mauritius, and thrice the size of Singapore.
In addition to the old zones such as Charminar, Serilingampally, Kukatpally, Secunderabad, Khairatabad and LB Nagar, the GHMC will have six new zones — Malkajgiri, Uppal, Shamshabad, Rajendranagar, Golconda and Quthbullapur.
The details of ward boundaries are placed on notice boards of all circle, zonal and head office buildings.
The enlarged GHMC was formed after the government merged 27 urban local bodies with the GHMC. According to the municipal administration and urban development, the population of GHMC now exceeds 1.34 crore, necessitating further decentralisation to ensure uniformity in administration, improved service delivery, and convenience to people. The reason for fixing boundaries was stated to be decadal census to be conducted in 2026-27.
