Island Near Kadam Project Emerges as Tourism Spot

Ropeway, boating and cottages are among proposed attractions at the scenic backwater spot

Adilabad: While ‘Island tourism’ is gaining popularity, the Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation is keen on promoting it in a big way.

In this backdrop, an island in the backwaters of the Kadam project has assumed importance as a potential tourism spot. The earlier efforts to develop the island as a tourism spot with boating facilities did not make any headway in 2016. A plan now is to organise "night stays" there for tourists.

The island is located in the middle of the Sahyadri hills and downstream of the Kuntala waterfalls. The place can be reached even by setting up a ropeway by way of an additional attraction to tourists.

Dashi Goud of Kadam village said the place called ‘Island’ is 750 meters from the Kadam project gates area. Generally, tourists reach close to the island by boat, but they can’t enter the place, as it is covered by forests.

The island is located between Dharmajipet, Revojipet and Peddore villages, which surround the Island in Kadam mandal in Nirmal district.

Dashi Goud said the people are showing an interest in visiting islands like Laknavaram Lake in Mulugu district. “Tourists will prefer night stays and enjoy good food at restaurants and cottages in such places,” he felt.

The tourism department operates boating visitors to the Kadam project, but the local fishermen did not allow the boat near the Island for fear that the nets they set up there would get damaged. “There are many medicinal plants in the forests on the island,” he said.

Srikanth Reddy, in-charge district tourism officer for Nirmal, said a private agency, on behalf of the TGTDC, visited the Kadam project to develop the area as a major tourism spot. They propose to introduce various facilities, including a ropeway at the Kadam project, he said.
