Indiramma Housing Scheme Fulfils Kolam Adivasis’ Dream
Permanent homes under the Indiramma housing scheme have transformed the lives of Kolam adivasis, replacing unsafe mud and thatched houses.
Kolam adivasis, a particularly vulnerable tribal group, are happy as their long standing dream of having a permanent house has been fulfilled.
Adivasis used to face problems in their traditional houses. They expressed their happiness before the students of the sociology department of Satavahana University, Karimnagar.
As part of the curriculum for the course on Participatory Learning Appraisal (PLA), a team of 11 students accompanied by four faculty members visited Kolam Kotari village falls in Kerameri mandal of Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district.
During the visit, students studied various aspects including living conditions, lifestyle, financial conditions and others of Kolams.
Out of 50 families, 22 got permanent houses under the Indiramma housing scheme. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy handed over houses to adivasis while participating in a house warming ceremony held in the village on June 1, 2026.
Sharing the visit details with Deccan Chronicle, student Ashvini Om Prakash said that Kolam adivasis felt happy for having the permanent house since they would not have such huge money to construct houses.
Since adivasis prepare houses with either mud or thatched roof, snakes used to enter their houses. Moreover, rain water too entered such houses, he informed.
Another student, M. Chennakeshavulu, said Kolams wanted the government to sanction houses to the remaining families. The Indiramma housing scheme became a boon for Kolams since their lands and houses were acquired for the Singareni’s Kairiguda opencast coal mine. Kolam families lived in Chopidi, Chanduguda, Thayaguda and Govarguda.
Head of the department, Prof. Surepalli Sujatha, who led the students, said that Komal adivasis felt having permanent houses as a pride symbol.
