Indian-Origin Saritha Loses New York Attorney-General Election

Saritha Reddy contested as the Republican candidate with the support of President Donald Trump but lost to incumbent Democrat Letitia James, who was elected for a third consecutive term.

KARIMNAGAR: Indian-origin Komatireddy Saritha Reddy, who contested the New York Attorney General election as part of the US midterm polls, has been defeated.

Saritha Reddy contested as the Republican candidate with the support of President Donald Trump but lost to incumbent Democrat Letitia James, who was elected for a third consecutive term.

Accepting her defeat, Saritha posted a message on her social media page: “I am deeply grateful to the thousands of volunteers, supporters, and everyday New Yorkers who believed in our campaign and our vision for a safer and stronger New York”.

She added: “I’m proud of the campaign we ran. We showed that politics does not have to be about division and it’s not about hate. We brought people together around common sense, found common ground and had real concrete ideas for making people’s lives better.

Ultimately, that’s what public office is about – public service means serving people, not celebrity or personal gain. Whatever I do moving forward will be about exactly that – serving others and making New York safer.”

Saritha is the daughter of cardiologist Hanumanth Reddy and rheumatologist Geetha Reddy. Her parents are natives of Chegyam village in Velgatoor mandal of Jagtial district. They migrated to the US and settled there in the 1980s.

Saritha was born in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York. The family later moved to Missouri.

The 41-year-old has experience in the legal profession. She initially worked as a lecturer at Columbia Law School before moving to court. She argued cases involving terrorism, illegal drug transportation, cybercrime and money laundering. She also served as chief of staff at the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Saritha is a close relative of Congress leader and former Satavahana Urban Development Authority chairman Komatireddy Narender Reddy.
