HYDERABAD: The collapse of an unauthorised seven‑storey building in Anjaiahnagar, Gachibowli, which killed two workers on Saturday, has raised concerns over the spread of similar constructions across Hyderabad. HYDRAA and municipal staff have begun identifying unsafe structures in the nearby areas, while residents are urging immediate action.
Residents point to several such structures in older, densely populated parts of the city. In Hanuman Tekdi, a G+4 building has reportedly come up on a plot of only 85 square yards. Neighbours said permission was not granted for four floors, yet the building was constructed and is now up for sale. Citizens say violations are widespread, with multi‑floor buildings on small plots in Ameerpet, Punjagutta and other busy localities. Many are squeezed between existing houses, with little open space and narrow approach roads. The concern is acute in older and central areas, where land prices are high and plots small. Residents fear pressure to maximise built‑up space is driving violations, with buildings raised several floors beyond permitted limits.
“In several areas of Ameerpet, illegal floored buildings can be observed. Many run hostels and commercial establishments from these structures, showing little respect for rules. At least now, municipal staff should wake up and take action,” said Malleshwara Reddy, a community member in Ameerpet.
