Iconic Taj Banjara Hotel Demolished to Make Way for 40-Storey High-Rise
People familiar with the redevelopment said a tower of around 40 floors is planned on the site, although the developer has not officially announced the project.

Hyderabad:Demolition of the iconic Taj Banjara Hotel in Banjara Hills is under way, marking the end of one of Hyderabad’s best-known hospitality landmarks as the lakeside property makes way for a major real estate redevelopment. Work began towards the end of April and has now entered the structural demolition stage, with the hotel’s outer walls being dismantled, making the transformation visible from outside.
A contractor associated with the demolition told Deccan Chronicle that the process began by clearing the building from within. “We first removed the doors, windows, electrical wiring, wooden fittings, iron fixtures and other reusable materials. Only after emptying the building did we begin demolishing the walls and the main structure,” he said. The demolition is expected to take another four months, after which excavation for the new project will begin.

Spread over about 3.4 acres overlooking Banjara Lake, Taj Banjara was among Hyderabad’s earliest luxury hotels. It was managed by the ITC Group until 1986 before operations were taken over by Taj GVK Hotels, which ran the property for nearly four decades. The hotel ceased operations in 2023 after the lease expired.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) sealed it last year over pending property tax dues of about ₹1.43 crore accumulated over two years. The seal was later removed after part of the dues was paid.
The property has since been acquired for about ₹315 crore by Auro Realty, earlier called rhe Aurobindo Group. The company has been expanding its footprint in Hyderabad with premium residential and mixed-use developments, including large integrated projects in the western corridor. While it has not disclosed plans for the Banjara Hills site, sources said the redevelopment is expected to add another high-rise project to its portfolio.
