HYDRAA’s efforts yield quick results

Hyderabad: After two days of heavy rain on Friday and Saturday, several lakes in Hyderabad under the care of the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) have filled to their maximum levels.

Bathukamma Kunta in Amberpet and Thammidi Kunta in Hitech City, both rejuvenated by HYDRAA, saw rainwater flow smoothly into them without flooding nearby areas. Officials speaking to

said the upgraded water channels and stormwater drains ensured steady inflow and prevented waterlogging.

“We created channels and drains around the lake so water does not inundate nearby areas, but steadily flows into the lake through inlet channels,” a HYDRAA official said.

Residents confirmed minimal waterlogging. Mohd. Arif, who lives near Bathukamma Kunta, said, “It rained heavily these past few days, but water flowed continuously into the lake. By the next morning, our colony was clear.”

On handling excess water, officials said outlet gates are opened when a lake reaches full capacity to release water in a controlled manner, preventing flooding and protecting the lake. With more rain expected in the coming weeks, HYDRAA authorities will continue monitoring the lakes and clearing clogged drains to safeguard surrounding colonies from waterlogging and flooding.
