Hyderabad’s July Rainfall Uneven Across Mandals
Telangana as a whole ended June had 115.3 mm rainfall against 130.3 mm, a 12 per cent shortfall.
Hyderabad:Hyderabad’s monsoon entered July almost on par with normal rainfall, but by the end of the month the wider urban region showed a markedly uneven picture, with western mandals recording excess rain even as several eastern and northeastern areas remained deficient.
Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) data shows Hyderabad district received 103 mm in June against the normal 107.4 mm, a shortfall of just 4 per cent. The neighbouring Medchal–Malkajgiri district had a much weaker June, receiving 63.3 mm against 107.3 mm, 41 per cent below normal. Telangana as a whole ended June had 115.3 mm rainfall against 130.3 mm, a 12 per cent shortfall.
By July 31, TGDPS data for the combined GHMC, CMC and MMC urban region placed cumulative rainfall since June 1 at 236.5 mm against a normal 276 mm, or 14.3 per cent below normal. This still falls within the normal category, which covers deviations between minus 19 and plus 19 per cent.
The urban average, however, conceals large differences between mandals. Moinabad recorded 387.3 mm against 244.1 mm normal, 59 per cent excess, while Shankarpalle received 402.5 mm against 276.9 mm, 45 per cent excess. Rajendranagar was 34 per cent above normal, Ramachandrapuram 30 per cent, Golconda 24 per cent and Serilingampally 22 per cent.
At the opposite end, Ghatkesar recorded 145 mm against 290.3 mm, a 50 per cent deficit. Kapra and Dundigal Gandimaisamma were 49 per cent deficient, Keesara 48 per cent and Tirumalagiri 47 per cent. Alwal, Uppal and Medipally each remained 46 per cent below normal.
Closer to the city centre, Secunderabad was 17 per cent below normal and Himayatnagar 19 per cent. Charminar and Khairatabad were 23 per cent deficient, Nampally 24 per cent, while Amberpet and Saroornagar were 26 per cent below normal.
The figures leave a 109‑percentage‑point difference between Moinabad’s 59 per cent excess and Ghatkesar’s 50 per cent deficit, despite the urban region as a whole remaining within the normal category.
