Hyderabad’s Historic Sites Have A History of Secret Tunnel Rumours
The news on discovering a tunnel at Qutub Shahi Tombs generated curiosity among people, especially historians

Hyderabad: Even as officials of Archeological Survey of India (ASI) intensified their efforts in examining an underground tunnel near Qutub Shahi Tombs on Thursday, two other historic places in Hyderabad – Charminar and Golconda Fort have the past history of rumours related to secret tunnels between them.
Though officials from the State government and ASI detected a few arches and old structures appeared to be tunnels earlier but could not confirm in spite of carrying out excavation works. In 2025, a civil contractor found two underground arches while conducting digging works to construct a barrack for Hyderabad police. This raised suspicion whether the arches lead to a tunnel connecting Charminar and Golconda.
In 2012, rumors of a hidden Nizam-era tunnel and underground vault at a school in Saifabad (near the old Secretariat) sparked a massive frenzy. The officials carried out a digging operation for a few days but later suspended it.
The latest news on discovering a tunnel at Qutub Shahi Tombs generated curiosity among people, especially historians. A large number of people started thronging the place since Thursday to have a glance of the area and take photographs with their smartphones.
