HYDERABAD: A 23-year-old postgraduate student from the Financial District reported losing ₹40,000 after falling victim to a extortion scam on a dating app.
According to his complaint, the incident began on December 19 when a woman identifying herself as ‘Yashika’ contacted him through the app and continued conversations through WhatsApp and Instagram.
The student alleged he received a WhatsApp video call during which an unknown woman appeared nude and coerced him into undressing.
Hours later, a man allegedly sent him an edited clip of the call, threatening to upload it on social media unless money was paid.
The student transferred ₹40,000 to a bank account provided by the caller. He said further demands followed, including another ₹40,000 and later ₹1.2 lakh, with threats to circulate the video among his Instagram followers.
The complainant refused to pay additional amounts and blocked the numbers, but continued to receive fresh threats. While earlier transactions were mentioned, police recorded the loss as ₹40,000.
