Hyderabad To Get World-Class Mega Farmers Market At Koheda

The Koheda Global Green Market project has taken shape with the government approving the detailed project report (DPR) for establishing a world-class integrated market in nearly 200 acres in Koheda near Hayathnagar.

Hyderabad: What if a single market could bring together fruits, flowers, dairy, frozen, dry fruit, meat, fish, seafood and poultry under the one roof. That is what the Koheda market is set to deliver soon.

The Koheda Global Green Market project has taken shape with the government approving the detailed project report (DPR) for establishing a world-class integrated market in nearly 200 acres in Koheda near Hayathnagar.

In 2021, the BRS government had temporarily shifted the fruit market from Kothapet to Batasingaram with a plan to establish a market in Koheda. It failed to come out with the DPR.

Now that the Congress government has approved the DPR, the foundation stone for the project is set to be laid shortly. One of the Koheda market’s main objectives is to establish a world-class integrated wholesale market for fruits, flowers, dairy, frozen, dry fruit, meat, seafood and poultry in one location,

As per the DPR, the project will come in two modes — build-design-turnkey (EPC) mode in 168 acres and public private partnership (PPP) in 31 acres, at an estimated cost of Rs 2,890 crore. The EPC mode is expected to be completed in two years followed by PPP mode with a private investment for setting up primary food processing and packaging, units and cold storages besides anchor stores.

The market will comprise four auction halls, 44 mezzanine shops, 396 retail shops for trading apple, pomegranate, oranges, guava, grapes and all imported fruits. Each agent will receive an allotted shop with storage space.

Importers and exporters will have dedicated space to lease premises for exhibiting and selling their produce, facilitating interactions and transactions between international traders and potential buyers.

The market will also include two petrol pumps and a Tower of Excellence with four commercial floors and a helipad for executive access, and six high speed passenger lifts.

With the expansion from 31 acres in Batasingaram to 199 acres in Koheda, the market will ensure better prices for farmers besides reducing the post harvest losses for farmers. It will also boost exports and promote sustainable urban logistics using clean energy solutions.

Market arrivals are expected to increase from 4.83 lakh metric tonnes (LMTs) to 13.62 LMTs by 2047, while annual transaction value is expected to grow from Rs 1,206 crore to Rs 4,100 crore.

Gaddiannaram Market Committee chairman Chiluka Madhusudhan Reddy said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy planned to develop the Koheda market according to global standards, which is aligned with Telangana Rising-2047.

“The Batasingaram facility is insufficient, forcing many traders to operate from outside. Once the Koheda market is completed, it will attract more traders, boosting the state’s revenue. Currently, we are paying nearly Rs 70 lakh per month for rents at Batasingaram. But once the project gets operational, it will improve the market revenue,” he added.
