Hyderabad: As the new academic year approaches, schools and parents in Hyderabad are preparing for a fresh start. The city has around 2,200 school buses operated by various schools for the transportation of students.
The transport department has been conducting inspections of these school buses since May 17 to issue fitness certificates. So far, nearly 80 per cent of the buses have passed the fitness tests.
Transport minister Ponam Prabhakar is scheduled to meet with school managements and transport department officials on Wednesday at RTC Kalabhavan. The minister will discuss important safety guidelines to be strictly followed by schools.
RTA officials explained, “Most buses have cleared the fitness tests. Some had expired insurance, which was promptly renewed. A few had worn-out tyres, which were replaced before certification was granted.”
Officials added, “The RTA will continue to closely monitor school buses and their safety measures. Transport managers recently attended sessions outlining mandatory do’s and don’ts.”
They stressed that “pre-trip checks are essential, including mandatory drunk tests for all crew members and regular vehicle condition inspections. Drivers should also undergo monthly health check-ups.”
A. Makness, a transport incharge at an international school, said, “Every morning around 6:30 am, all drivers and supporting staff undergo a drunk test. We then conduct thorough vehicle inspections. Only after two layers of checks are completed do the buses leave the premises."
