Hyderabad: Rotten Eggs of Anganwadi Sparks Concerns

Residents questioned anganwadi staff after learning that the eggs had been stored for over 10 days because the centre was closed. When asked, an anganwadi teacher reportedly told them the eggs were kept during the school closure and were now being distributed.

Hyderabad: Rotten eggs were distributed to children at an anganwadi in Mehdipatnam’s Asifnagar, raising concerns among parents about food safety and hygiene under the Supplementary Nutrition Programme. A local resident reported that out of 32 eggs given to his twin children, four were spoiled.

Child development project officer (CDPO) L. Renuka confirmed the complaint, explaining that anganwadi teachers were on summer holidays in May. “The eggs were supplied under the nutrition programme. Due to the summer heat and prolonged holidays, some eggs may have gone bad. The complainant informed us they were away from home for a week, and the remaining eggs were still in the fridge. We will inspect the eggs tomorrow and prepare a report,” she said.

The Hyderabad district welfare officer confirmed an inquiry is underway. “Further details will be shared after the investigation is complete,” the officer added. These eggs were part of the government’s initiative to improve nutrition among children, pregnant women and lactating mothers. The incident has sparked concern among parents about the quality and safety of food provided at Anganwadi centres.
