Hyderabad Residents Flag Poor TGSPDCL Response During Power Outages

Consumers have raised concerns over frequent power cuts, voltage fluctuations and the lack of timely response from TGSPDCL field officials.

Residents across the city expressed their growing frustration over the poor response from Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL, southern discom) officials during power cuts and voltage fluctuations. This is especially so as the power cuts take with them internet connectivity.

Many consumers alleged that assistant engineers (AEs) and other field-level officials often do not answer phone calls when electricity supply is disrupted, leaving people without information for hours.

A user on X wrote “Power has been down since 9.30 am… and no proper response was received from the AE. The outage was scheduled from 9.30 am to 12 pm (noon), but even at 5.20 pm the power was not restored.”

Citizens acknowledged that while power interruptions were unavoidable due to faults, heavy rain or maintenance work, the lack of communication from officials was a major concern as unscheduled outages upset their schedules. They complained that their calls to the contact numbers provided by the electricity department either went unanswered or the phoned remain switched off.

Saket Singh, a resident of Madhapur’s Ayyappa Society, said, “Around four days ago, out of nowhere the power went out at 10 am. I was working from home, and I called the AE after searching his number online. His phone was busy the entire day, and almost three hours later he switched off the phone. The power came back at 4 pm.”

"We understand that technical faults can happen, but someone should at least answer the phone and tell us what is happening. Keeping us in the dark only increases frustration," he added.

A resident from Peerzadiguda said voltage fluctuations had become frequent in the area. "Recently we had major power fluctuations at 11 pm. When I tried contacting the local AE, he spoke very rudely with me and said he won’t do anything. We do not know whom to approach during emergencies," the resident said.

Many also said that official communication from the TGSPDCL authorities is often delayed, arriving well after the power outage occurs. A resident of Himayat Nagar said “Today I received an SMS from the power department at 10:45 am, saying we might experience a power cut at 10:15 am. Why is there such a huge delay in communication?”

TGSPDCL authorities did not respond to Deccan Chronicle’s questions on the issue.
