Hyderabad: Quality Education for Cops’ Children Key to Staff Welfare, Says DGP

Hyderabad: Providing quality education to children of police personnel is an important component of staff welfare and would help personnel discharge their duties more effectively, state Director General of Police C.V. Anand said on Saturay.

Anand laid the foundation stone for Academic Block-I of the Young India Police School (YIPS) on the OCTOPUS–Greyhounds campus in Manchirevula.

The DGP said the initiative followed the chief minister’s direction in December 2024 to establish a dedicated school for children of police personnel.

YIPS was envisioned on the lines of Army and Sainik schools, with education meeting national and international standards.

The school began functioning from a temporary campus in April last year with 120 students. Its strength has since increased to around 360 and is expected to reach 700-720 next year, if the new building is completed.

Anand said the school would focus on academics, discipline, sports and co-curricular activities, besides promoting a drug-free environment.

Students would receive opportunities in cricket, rock climbing, horse riding and other adventure activities. “Education should go beyond academics and prepare children to become responsible citizens,” he said.

The institution would also offer quality education at an affordable fee to children from other sections. Children of Home Guards would be eligible, while 50 per cent of seats would be reserved for general students.

Anand also said academic and other sub-committees have been formed to oversee development. Government support would help YIPS offer education up to Plus-2 on a single campus. He said the aim was to develop it into a high-standard institution within two to three years.

DGs Mahesh Bhagwat and Anil Kumar, Cyberabad CP Ramesh, senior police officials, YIPS principal Dr Anita Reddy, staff, students and parents attended the programme.
