Hyderabad Police Solve Koti SBI Firing Incident; 2 Detained

Two persons shot at a cloth merchant who had gone to an ATM at Koti to deposit cash, and fled on his bike with his bag containing Rs.6 lakh

Hyderabad: Two men including a gig worker were arrested in the ATM robbery in Koti, where the duo opened fire at a Kerala-based clothes trader, injuring him and decamping with cash worth `6 lakh, almost over 20 days after the incident occurred.

In a press meet here on Tuesday, task force DCP Gaikwad Vaibhav Raghunath identified the accused as Furkhan Ahmed, 36, and Mohd Taiyyab Tyagi, 30, a cab driver and the mastermind of the robbery – both natives of Uttar Pradesh. Five other accused involved in the robbery – Faheem Ahmed, Naushad, Abid, Danish Tyagi, and Mohd Matlub – were stated to be absconding.

Based on a tip-off, police arrested the accused near Chandrayangutta and seized cash worth `2.38 lakh, a country-made pistol with 35 live rounds, two magazines and two mobile phones from their possession.

Officials said that Taiyyab had come to Hyderabad in February 2024. During his early morning rides, he often noticed passengers depositing large amounts of cash at ATMs located in the Abids, Koti, and Nampally areas. After struggling financially, he decided to commit robberies. He already has a criminal case registered against him in Uttar Pradesh.

He then contacted his uncle, Noushad and his cousin Danish Tyagi and told them about the robbery plan. The accused further involved Abid, Furkhan and Faheem Ahmed in the plan.

Abid, Furkhan and Faheem reached the city after procuring pistols from a local source in Uttar Pradesh. On the morning of January 31, the three Taiyyab and Abid receed the Nampally railway station to find a target. During the same time, Furkhan and Faheem waited at the SBI ATM at Koti, for a target to arrive. On seeing the victim enter, the two immediately went inside, threatened and injured him after firing two rounds of bullets, one at the floor and the other at the victim's leg and fled on the victim's two-wheeler with `6 lakh cash.

The DCP explained that all the accused then went to Shaheennagar in Chandrayangutta, counted the cash there and fled to different places.

“Their hideout location, where all they travelled during the day and night is yet to be known as the accused are being investigated. But all of them have been previously involved in similar robberies. We did not have any technical evidence as the accused had switched off their phones,” DCP Raghunath said, addressing the media.

Furkhan was previously involved in eight criminal cases in UP. “We recently received information that two of the accused from this gang were recently arrested by the UP police. One of them had surrendered before the police,” the DCP said in the media briefing. Further investigation into the incident is underway.
